Thinned out Acrylics that look like Watercolors - a tutorial of sorts

Homeunderground asked me how I use thinned out Acrylics to mimic Watercolors. Beneath a ‘read more’ because it’s image heavy!

Supplies:
*Container for water (the one pictured below is made out of stainless steel)

*Paintbrushes
1 Synthetic for the actual painting (or more, depending on preference)
1 - 2 for mixing paints & adding water (Not pictured below. I use one of the ones that comes in kids craft boxes for mixing and a cheap soft brush for adding water to the mix. Sometimes you can find one that will fit all of your needs)

* Paint pallet (that I have yet to clean from this morning)

*Acrylic paints (For the sake of this tutorial, I’m using primary colors. I prefer the ones in the tubes for this because you won’t be using much paint for this technique)

*Heavyweight sketchbook paper or watercolor paper ( For this I’m using a Mead Academie Sketchbook 11 x 8.5 inches)

*Standard #2 pencil

Step 1: Sketch!

Reference image is from here. I searched for ‘lion walking’ until I found the one I liked.

Now that the sketch is done, we can move on to painting!
Because these are acrylics, I would advise you to use only one color at a time, because once they’re dry, you can’t use them anymore.

You start by adding a small amount of paint in the pallet. You can add more if you need to increase the opacity, but the idea here is to get the paint to look like watercolors, so the opacity needs to be low so you can build up on the paper.

Take your water brush and start adding water into the pallet. Using a brush will help you control how much water/the level of opacity. Use the mixing brush (the cheap plastic one) to mix them together and then scrape off the excess on the edge of your pallet so it drips back into the mix. (Those plastic brushes don’t hold paint very well, which is why I like them for mixing brushes)

Be sure to make enough thinned paint for your project or keep a blank white sheet of paper and make a color mixing chart so you know how to mix more of the same color later on. If it’s just one color, then you won’t need the extra paper/mixing chart. This is very thin/low opacity, so it’s perfect for the first wash.

You have to wait for the paper to be COMPLETELY DRY before adding the next layer! Otherwise the paper will buckle (as seen below)

I went ahead and added the same wash to the face before mixing more of the same color at a stronger opacity to add a few more layers to the mane and ear. (below)

Now that I’m done with the pure scarlet paint, I’m adding blue (it says ultramarine blue on the tube. That is not Ultramarine Blue but w/e, we’ll just skip the label and list it as blue XD) Mix that in with the remainder of the red until it’s fully blended.

Time skip! Added the purplish wash to the nose/mouth, the whisker spots and the outer rim of the eye. I let that dry, then used a dab of yellow at 100% opacity (straight from the tube) for the eye. I had a some left on my brush, so I ran it over my signature in the bottom right hand corner and it gave it a cool effect.

Added more dabs of blue/more layers of a cooler color to the nose/mouth, the whisker spots and the outer rim of the eye until I was satisfied with the effect.

And ta-da! Here’s the result!
